Not Down With Round: Presented by Simon Levin

In this one-day demo workshop Simon Levin will introduce techniques that will change the way you think about throwing on the wheel. The truth is that the wheel is just another hand-building tool. What might you make if you thought more openly and freely about this wonderful tool?

Techniques like paddling, faceting, adding volume from the interior, squaring, throwing off the hump, and throwing square will be demonstrated.

Simon’s workshops are always full of lively discussions, annoyingly poignant questions, playful humour and engaging dialogue. This is a good day to get your creative juices flowing and inspire your own studio practice.

The workshop will include an artist lecture by Simon Levin.

Morning and afternoon tea will be provided.

About Simon Levin

US-based Simon Levin has been working in clay since 1990. Simon has dedicated his life to being a full-time studio potter working almost exclusively with wood firing. An MFA recipient from the University of Iowa, Simon exhibits, teaches, builds kilns, and is published internationally. In 2013 he was a Senior Fulbright Scholar in Taiwan.

Between 2004 and 2023 his apprenticeship program has trained 24 potters. He hosts a video series on the Ceramics Arts Network, where he brings dialogue to process.

Formerly Director at Large for the National Council for Education of the Ceramic Arts (NCECA), and the founder of Cohorts.Art (a small batch mentorship program), Simon seeks every day to advance the frontiers of clay, and evangelize for this empowering material.
