Jennie Lisha

When I was at school I was the only one in my class who was asked if she would like to drop Latin for Art, it was a no brainer! I have always been interested in art.

After leaving school I worked in Sydney and London as a commercial artist. It was not until our children started school, that I commenced a three year studio ceramic certificate course at the Gold Coast TAFE graduating in 1981.

At the end of my last year at TAFE, my husband and I opened ” Gallery of Local Crafts” in Surfers Paradise where we made and sold our own and other local pottery. From Surfers Paradise we restored an old arrowroot mill, naming it ” Historic Rivermill” in the Gold Coast hinterland, where we set up a pottery, gallery and restaurant.

Since then I have worked in a home based studio both in Sydney for 12 years, and here on the Gold Coast for the last 4 years. I have always tried to make things that were Australian, and for many years have decorated some of my work with opals which I have collected while travelling around Australia.

For 20 years I have concentrated on working with porcelain clay, as I like the purity and strength of the fired pieces. For the last 10 of those years I have created porcelain jewellery, making each ceramic bead, pendant, brooch or earring individually, so that the wearer knows that what they have is unique.
