
Water Etching with Narumi Ii

This full-day workshop, conducted by Gold Coast ceramicist Narumi Ii, will be a hands-on, in-depth program exploring her unique intricate and multi-layered water etching technique.
Narumi will demonstrate this traditional technique, and other possibilities, using shellac and alternative materials. The workshop will cover materials and tools; safety, preparation; achieving precision; variations; troubleshooting; firing and glaze testing; and a step-by-step guide to creating a multi-layered water etching technique.
This is a participatory workshop and Narumi will guide you through the process. Participants are advised to bring 2-3 small dry green ware pieces and some green ware test tiles to work on (ideally pieces should be at least 5mm thick and made out of a smooth fine clay), a selection of inexpensive brushes, a towel, small craft knife, and a hair dryer (if possible). All other materials will be provided.
Morning and afternoon tea will be provided. BYO lunch.

About Narumi Ii
Narumi Ii (not Li) was born in Japan and has always had a keen interest in all forms of art and design. She has worked as a fashion designer and photographer in London, Tokyo, and Singapore before settling in Australia. Narumi’s ceramic practise is focused on using Nerikomi and water etching techniques to create her own signature style.
Career highlights include:
