Raku Kiln - fire erupting from the top

Spring Barbie-Raku

Celebrate spring with a fun, creative day of fire, colour and community at the CAQ Spring Raku Firing and Barbeque!

Whether you’re an experienced ceramic artist or trying raku for the first time, this relaxed social event is a fantastic opportunity to catch up with fellow members, share ideas, and experience the excitement of seeing your work transformed in the raku kiln.

Members are invited to bring up to three bisque-fired raku clay pieces to be fired in the CAQ raku kilns. To help us maximise kiln space, please make your pieces approximately 10–12 cm wide and designed so they can be stacked one on top of another. To avoid disappointment, it is strongly recommended your work is made from a suitable raku fire clay.

As a bonus, you will be able to savour the delights of a barbeque which is included in your attendance fee. We will a range of dietary options available however participants will need to BYO drinks.

Come along for a day of creativity, great company, and the magic of raku firing. We look forward to seeing what you create!

Bring your own bisque-fired pieces, don’t worry if you don’t have access to a kiln as we will have a small selection of bisque-ware available for purchase.

Please note, this event is being held at the Brisbane Institute of Art (BIA) 41 Grafton St, Windsor QLD 4030. Free and ample parking is available.

Tips for success:

  • Bring up to 3 bisque-fired pieces of varying shape and sizes – with the understanding that perhaps not all will be fired and is dependent on space in the kiln and timing.
  • To maximize kiln capacity, please ensure your pieces are approximately 10–12 cm wide and shaped to allow safe stacking.
  • Work must be made from suitable raku clay. Standard raku glazes will be provided by CAQ.
  • Even thickness of pieces is very important
  • Make work with good solid rims and bases
  • Avoid large flat pieces
  • Avoid fragile additions and joins
  • To ensure a safe environment for everyone, completing the CAQ Event Safety Waiver is mandatory upon registration at the event; please exercise common sense regarding your attire (natural fibres and closed shoes are strongly recommended near the kiln) and enjoy our BYO social refreshments responsibly once active firing has concluded.
