Raku & Obvara Workshop 21st February 2026
Join the CAQ team and volunteers for a Raku and Obvara Evening.
This is a BYO evening picnic so feel free to bring along your favorite picnic dinner and enjoy a relaxed evening with us. Pack whatever makes you happiest—snacks, sandwiches, sweets—and settle in for a cozy night of Raku and Obvara fun.
Bring your own bisque-fired pieces (up to 10 bisque-fired pieces).
Don’t worry if you don’t have access to a kiln as we will have a small selection of bisque-ware available for purchase.
Glazes will be supplied – You may decorate the pieces as you please with our selection of Raku glazes.
Remember to keep the glaze off the bottom – clear rims for easy stacking, we will have volunteers to help guide you on the night.
Horse hair and feathers for the Raku will be supplied and Obvara firing will also be available.
Please note, this event is being held at the Brisbane Institute of Art (BIA) 41 Grafton St, Windsor QLD 4030. Free and ample parking is available.
Tips for success:
- Bring up to 10 bisque-fired pieces of varying shape and sizes – with the understanding that perhaps not all will be fired and is dependent on space in the kiln and timing.
- Varying sizes, especially tall and thin (maximum height 15cm) is handy to fit in tight areas of the kiln
- A white clay is best to bring out the bright Raku glaze colours
- Even thickness of pieces is very important
- Make work with good solid rims and bases
- Avoid large flat pieces
- Avoid fragile additions and joins
- Please wear closed-in shoes and suitable clothes (long sleeves, long legs, non-flammable fabrics). Safety gear will be provided.
$90 for members; $135 for non-members
