CAQ Toolkit #3 Gas Reduction Firing Workshop

This workshop will be run by a team of our very knowledgeable and experienced board members and staff

Sunday 20 June 9:30am to 4pm | Sunday 27 June 9:30am to 12pm

Fee includes morning tea on both days, glazes and materials and a copy of the firing log. BYO Lunch and note book

  • 9am first Sunday will be glazing and packing the kiln
  • explanation of glaze effects, application and requirements for packing a reduction firing
  • attendees can use the CAQ glazes on hand which include – Chun, Celadon and either Temoku or Shino glazes, participants can also byo their own reduction glazes (but will be required to provide the recipe just to check their suitability)
  • there will be samples of reduced ware
  • attendees can bring 2 bisque fired stoneware pieces that would hold around 500mL in size (plus a few small space filler pieces) – this will ensure all participants will have their work fired
  • the kiln will be lit to demonstrate the process but the kiln will actually be fired by CAQ during the week. All are welcome to be present for the firing (midweek date TBC) which usually takes between 6-8 hours
  • 9am second Sunday 28 June, unpacking the kiln will take place with a discussion of the results
  • Q & A on firing in a reduced atmosphere
  • a reference booklet of glaze recipes, handy hints, a sample firing schedule is included in the fee
  • attendees will have an opportunity to light the kiln and experience changing the various kiln settings to gain an understanding of the process
