My name is Kimberly Oberlin and I’m originally from the small town of Angola, Indiana, USA but now living and creating in Australia. I’ve always been a creator of arts and crafts for as long as I can remember…even as a small small child I’d be whipping up any crafty project my mom would be willing to show me.

I didn’t really get serious about art until the age of 14, when I enrolled in a ceramics class at Angola High…and I just simply fell in love with clay. I furthered my education in the visual arts at Indiana University’s School of Art. In 2004, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in ceramics and photography. Film photography was a dying art, and finding pottery studios outside the university environment was nearly impossible; so my art had to be put on hold for a while.

After travelling the United States and Europe, I settled in Oregon in 2005 and was finally able to exploit my artistic interests by making jewellery (or “jewelry”, for all of my American friends) for a little boutique jewellery shop in downtown Eugene. I found great joy in creating beautiful pieces and seeing my clients proudly wearing the results.

Throughout my travels, I met and fell in love with an Australian man…that’s when I decided to make the big move to Brisbane, Australia in 2009. It wasn’t until I moved to Brisbane that I reignited my love of ceramics. On discovering Windmill Potteries, a now rare boutique pottery, I was accepted into their internship program. After a year of working at Windmill, I chose to follow my dream of having my very own studio. In January 2014, I bought a wheel, a kiln and built my own pottery studio! ? This is where I am today…getting filthy for countless hours in my studio and making countless glaze recipes that are being less and less disastrous.

Sometimes I think I need to go back to uni and get a chemistry degree just so I can wrap my head around all of these glaze chemicals! lol. All of my pottery pieces are handmade by myself and 95% of my pieces are all individually hand-thrown on the potters wheel. I can also make pieces to order, so each piece will have a unique look, from how the glaze has melted…to how the shapes have been carved and how the finger indents have been made.

When I’m not covered in clay, I’m in my craft room making jewellery. All of the stones I use in my jewellery are genuine semi-precious stones. I search for beads, findings (and anything else I fancy) when I travel, and bring them back to Australia where I create! For this reason, many of my pieces are one of a kind.

Even my sea glass pieces are found on the beaches of Asia, Australia, North and South America! But if you would like to have multiples of something, I just might be able to muster up something for you! Just ask!
