John Marshall

Born in 1975 in Moree, New South Wales and currently based in Brisbane, John Marshall is a ceramic artist whose works explore the expansive narratives of the Australian landscape and the intricacies of human nature. John’s artistic journey began in the expansive environments of Queensland and the Northern Territory, instilling in him a deep appreciation for remote and contrasting landscapes. his fondness for untouched landscapes manifests in his artwork, which reflects the raw beauty and harshness of these environments, filtered through his contemplation of human behaviour and erratic disposition.

John’s practice in ceramics primarily involves creating large-scale sculptures that blend functionality with creativity. He uses both wheel-thrown and hand-building techniques to explore the human figure as well as creature and anthropomorphic forms that teeter on the fringes of reality. In his work, he engages in a dialogue with the medium, examining how the precision of mark making and construction by humans interacts with the unpredictable effects of various clay bodies and glazes. The combination of these elements symbolises a collaboration with nature.

The essence of John’s work lies in provoking and confronting, urging viewers to reflect on the complexity of our existence. His sculptures act as a visual commentary on how individual thoughts and actions resonate within our collective environments. Through his work, John strives to demonstrate the fragile interconnectedness of our world and emphasise our mutual responsibility in preserving its balance. His art invites viewers to reconsider their role in the global landscape, advocating for mindfulness and sustainable interaction with our surroundings.
